Getting Credit When You Have A Bad Credit Score |
|
When you have poor credit you have essentially been stripped of all of your buying power. Many people don’t realize this when they are on their way toward having bad credit and they assume that the debt will just go away in time and that they will be able to move on from their mistakes. The fact is, if you have bad credit you will need to work a bit to reestablish yourself as credit worthy in the future. While many will tell you that when you have bad credit that you can’t get credit, you can obtain credit cards even when you have had a challenging past.
When you have bad credit you may not be able to get your typical credit card. Instead, you may have to go with a secured credit card. This may not be the most ideal option, but if you want to show credit card companies that you are worthy of a second chance this is the best way to go. When you have a secured credit card you are putting your money on the line, which shows credit card companies that you have something at stake this time around, which means you will likely take repaying your debts much more seriously.
When you get a secured credit card you can start out with a small amount of money, such as $100 or $200. Many people complain that when you have bad credit you shouldn’t be expected to secure a credit card because if you had money to spend you wouldn’t be in debt. This is a great argument but the credit card companies don’t want to make it easier for you to get more credit and then not pay on the debts again. You may have to actually work to save to get a secured credit card, but in the end this work will be worth it.
With your secured credit card you should be sure that you make purchases with it and then immediately pay off the purchase when your credit card statement comes. If you do this for nine to 12 months you will find that the credit card company may offer to extend your credit limit without you securing it. You may only be offered $100 or $200 more but it is progress and you should be careful to continue in the same manner of making regular charges and paying them off right away.
If you do this for a few more months you may find that you are able to start getting more credit offers that are not secured. In some instances it is a good idea to get three secured credit cards and only make minimal charges on them all and pay them all off. This will allow you to build more credit more quickly, which is often necessary if you are trying to build credit more quickly to make a purchase. The bottom line is that you can get credit and when you get this credit it can lead to bigger and better things.
