>> How Does a Secured Credit Card Work?

A secured credit card is a little different than your regular credit cards.  Secured credit cards are geared toward people with bad credit.  If you have bad credit then this type of credit card would work ideally for you.  Whether you have bad credit or you just want to establish some more credit, this type of card would fit great in your wallet.

A secured credit card works almost like a prepaid credit card in a way.  When you fill out your application and get approved, you will want to send in a deposit to the bank.  The bank is asking for a deposit because if you don’t pay off your bill in time, the bank will have collateral to work with.  This means that if you don’t pay your bill, the bank can take money out of your deposit account.

If you’re looking for a credit card to make purchases online or at the store, this card will work just like a credit card.  All major credit card companies such as Visa and MasterCard carry these types of cards.  The only thing different is when you make your payment to the companies themselves.  As for making purchases in the store, nothing will change on that end.

A security deposit is needed by a bank because as mentioned above, the card holder probably doesn’t have enough credit or their credit history is bad.  If a bank has a deposit, this means that they won’t have to worry about the cardholder not paying their bill off in time.  If the cardholder doesn’t pay their bill, they can simply deduct the payments from the security deposit.  Remember, if you continue to not pay off your bill on time, you won’t be able to establish your credit.
