Will a Secured Credit Card Raise Your Credit Score?
posted by FindSecuredCards.comWhen looking to raise your credit score, many people look into applying for a secured credit card. If you’re not sure on how a secured credit card works, I’ll give you a quick definition. A secured card requires you to put a deposit in your account that you affiliate with the bank that issues the card. The reason the bank asks for this deposit is because they want some sort of colleteral, just in case you can’t pay off your bill. Since the card companies don’t trust you yet, this is one of the reasons they ask for this deposit. Once you prove that you can pay off your bill, this deposit won’t be required.
Will these type of cards raise my credit score?
If you want a quick answer, it’s yes but there are things you have to look out for when you’re looking to raise your score. Here are a few things that you should look for –
Always get a card with a major logo. When you’re applying for your card, make sure the card has a major logo like Visa or MasterCard. The reason you’ll want this is because the cards without the major logo may not report to the credit bureaus.
Make sure they report. When you apply for a card, make sure that the card reports to the three major credit bureaus. If you’re unsure the card company doesn’t, you can always call them up and most of the time, they will be honest. If they say no though, you’ll want to find a new card but if they do report, you’re on the right track. The reason you’ll want your card to report to the major bureaus is because you’ll want your transactions to report when you purchase something. The better your credit is, the better this will be for your credit score.
Now that you know of the few things you need to look out for when applying, there are also some things that you need to do in order to raise your score.
By now, I’m hoping you have learned your lessons from your older credit card habits. Make sure that you pay your cards off in time and also make sure that you pay your card off in full. If you can accomplish this, you’ll slowly see your credit score rise. Remember, it’s not going to happen overnight but instead, over time. Be responsible with your card and by now, you’ll know that a secured credit card can help you raise your credit score.
