We all know that we should discipline ourselves more when it comes to budgeting. We have plans, yet somehow those plans always get pushed aside, and we find ourselves in the same situation again. Although it may seem very difficult to stick to, it definitely is possible. People who stick to their budgets are much happier, have more money saved, and can stretch a dollar much further than someone to who doesn’t stick to a budget. Although, how do people do it? What tips can you take to stick to your budget?
Reasonable - First of all, you want to make sure you make a reasonable budget. If you’re saying you’re only going to spend $10 per week, we both know that’s not going to happen. Key in the facts that you may need a little more gas money, your utility bills may be a little more, etc. Find a reasonable amount, and then add a few more bucks.
Budget – Now, you’re going to want to set your budget. Find an amount that you’re going to spend on your bills (bills you can change.) These bills will be your car payments, auto insurance, cell phone etc. Find a grand total of all these bills. Now, find a good amount for leisure, food, etc. Now, keep track of these two totals and try not to go over each.
10% – Keep in mind that you will always want to save 10% of each payment you earn. This means put it into a savings account, CD, money market, whatever. It is always important to have a back up fund if things don’t go your way.
Coupons – Always be sure to use coupons! Coupons are saying “use this and spend less”, yet people don’t use them. If they’re there use them! Get an Entertainment book, or look online to see how much you can save.
Keep track – It is always a good idea to keep track of how much you’re spending. I keep a little notebook and a pen in my purse to see how much I’m spending. Then I add up the totals and see what I’m at. I will know how much I’ve spent, and how much I can still spend before I go over my budget.
Following a budget is an important thing. If you’re really looking to save more money, be sure to keep these ideas in mind! These will not only help you save money, but you will be able to spend less, and get more for your money each month!
