If you’re dealing with debt or you might run into debt in the long run, you’re going to find that you’re going to get phone call after phone call from debt collectors.  It makes sense that they are going to call you because obviously they want you to pay.  But you’re soon going to find out or you might have already found this out is that they will do everything under the sun to get their money, even if it includes harassment.  There are some things you can do in order to prevent debt collectors from harassing you.

Tell them to simply stop- If they are harassing you at work, tell them this.  Not only are they tying up work phonelines, they are bothering you when you’re trying to make money.  Sometimes the collectors will not know this.  By simply telling them either on the phone or in writing, they should stop the harassment.

Write a letter- A great way to get the debt collectors to stop calling you are by sending them a cease and desist order or C+D letter.  To find a great example on how to write one, simply Google it.  These letters are inteneded to tell them that you simply don’t want the phone calls or you have intent on paying the bills and you don’t appreciate the calls.  Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Contact an attorney – I know you’re in debt and an attorney might be a little expensive but if you want to seek legal advice on the matter, an attorney is probably the best route to take.  I would advise that you meet with one and he/she will be able to tell you exactly what you can legally do to stop them from contacting you.  Once again, depending on the attorney, this may work or may not work.

No matter who you are, if you’re in debt, you’re getting calls and you can only avoid them so much.  if you’re getting harassing calls, those need to be stopped.  If they’re not so serious, you can politely tell them your situation and tell them you’re trying your best to call.  Being honest sometimes is the best way to go.  Remember, this all won’t happen if you pay your bills.  Listening to this alone should be enough to never get into debt again.
