The economy may not be the hottest right now, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t find a job out there.  As long as you have some talent, and you know how to write a great resume, you should be able to at least land phone calls from prospective employers.

Today, I want to point out some things that you should do, and shouldn’t do when it comes to your resume.  As long as you follow a few of these tips, you should be able to create a nice resume.

Target the job you’re going for - Instead of just sending out the same resume to thousands of employers, you’ll have to make each one unique in it’s own way.  Since every job is different, you’ll want to target that job, rather than be very broad.  The more detailed you are, the more likely you’re going to be taken seriously.

Use keywords that they are looking for - Some companies get a huge load of resumes, and instead of piling through them all, they will basically use software to find keywords.  Make sure that you include keywords that you think they are looking for.  If someone is looking for a cook, make sure you use keywords relating to cooking.

Be simple - No human resource manager wants to browse through 100s of words, and ten pages.  Instead, you want to keep it short and sweet.  If you’ve had a few jobs, highlight the points of them, and tell them what you can do.  They don’t need to know every detail.  This is what the interview process is for.

Blast your resume out - Did you know that there are cheap services out there that will post your resume to hundreds of sites?  The more sites you get on, the better your chances of getting a phone call are.  There are so many job opportunities out there that you can take advantage of.  Try services like ResumeRabbit to submit your resume.

Don’t apply for jobs you can’t do - My parents own a company, and countless times they will receive resumes for jobs, where the person isn’t even qualified.  If you’re not qualified for the job, don’t apply for it, because you’re just wasting your time!  Instead, find jobs that you know you can do, and apply for those instead.

Creating a resume isn’t hard, and as long as you’re simple, and follow a few tips above, you should be able to land at least a phone call.
