In modern American society the urge to spend is overwhelming. Many times you can buy what you want with a snap of your finger and the signature on the bottom line. Once you have obtained that credit card all you need to do is just say “charge it.” That is part of the problem with our society is the fact that we no longer feel the necessity to buy things for cash instead just put it on the card. Many times it is out of want rather than need. The want often outweighs the need ten times to one and so it goes that the urge to spend has become an obsession among many people.

The reason for this spend, spend philosophy derives from the fact that for many years people have had excellent incomes with the ability to pay the lender whenever they made a debt. The rise in incomes and the marketing process of American companies has increased spending in our society to it has gone beyond control. Now we are in a declining economy with many people losing their jobs so it is now necessary to cut back on spending. The habit of spending is like an addiction to some people. They spend just because it makes them feel good not because they need the item. This is very bad especially if you are hurting financially. The urge to spend can be overcome with a little self control and a strict budget

The average person usually has the things that they need in life to live comfortably. We have a very abundant life in America. We own more things and are able to go to more places than just about any place else in the world.  The idea that we have to have about a dozen credit cards, a line of credit that reaches around the globe is just an obsession that none of us needs to entertain. Instead we should be looking to a future where we are saving part of our salary and paying for the things that we purchase.

Many times we buy an item because of our ever desire to spend not because of our need to own. We do not have to be” keeping up with our neighbors” as this old philosophy is what has caused our economy to sink. The frightful thing is that our shrinking economy is also causing us to lose face around the world and at home. In order to be a stronger America we need as Americans to overcome our urge to spend.
