When in debt or if you’re just looking to save on money, it’s important that you look into saving money in all areas. One area we can look at today when it’s time to save money is with your utility bill. No matter who you are, as long as you rent or own a home, I’m sure you get one of these utility bills in the mail.
Start by installing a programmable thermostat
The first step you should take is by purchasing a programmable thermostat. A thermostat like this will help control your air conditioning and heating. It’s great to program when you’re not at home or sleeping. For example, if you sleep from 11 pm – 8 am, you can program your heat to go down to 65 degrees since you’ll be covered with blankets. Multiply your sleep by 30 days and that’s a great savings.
Buy better light bulbs
If you don’t have compact light bulbsin your house right now, you could be saving as much as $7 per light bulb per year. According to Energy Star, compact light bulbs use 75% less energy than traditional bulbs. Compact bulbs are extremely cheap and can be purchased for as little as a few dollars.
Get new appliances
If your appliances aren’t certified by energy star, you may want to look into getting new appliances for your kitchen. Sure, it’s going to cost you a lot up front but the savings in the long run are going to save you a fortune in the long haul. If you do buy new appliances, make sure that you purchase one that is a part of energy star.
Seal your windows
Did you know that if your windows are leaking air or letting heat in during the summer, it cost you over $200 a year extra? If you have to, get your windows weatherstripped and caulk all the windows on the outside if you can.
Watch the water wasters
Do you have a shower head that’s pre 1995? If so, you may want to look into getting a low flow shower head. The reason is because a newer based shower head will use a lower amount of gallons per minute compared to an older one. The same will go as well as a toilet. A shower head can easily be replaced for $40 and if your toilet is older than 1985, I would look into getting a new toilet as well. This can drop your water bill expenses by $150 annually.
These are just a few tips you can save when you’re looking to save on your utility bills. Remember to use your electronics properly. If you’re not in a room, turn the light off. If you’re not watching TV, turn it off. The more aggressive you are with your habits, the better you’ll be.
