Finding yourself in debt can lead yourself to a lot of trouble if you don’t know what you’re doing.  Sure, you can research and read all you want, but if you don’t get whats going on, you may just hurt yourself even more when it comes to your financial situation.

One of the best things that you can do when it comes to your debt situation is hire a lawyer.  A debt lawyer is going to be able to help you with your finances, fight the collectors, and do so much more.  If you don’t have the time or effort to fight debt yourself, you may want to consider setting some money aside to hire one.

When it comes down to hiring one, here’s what you need to look out for.

Ask friends and family first

When it comes to finding a service in life, I always ask my friends and family since they always have the best referrals. Since I’m not a fan of calling random people, I try my best to find someone that can do the job first, rather than doing the research myself.  Ask some of your friends and family to see if they can recommend anyone to you.

Ask and interview them

Don’t just hire the first person you come across.  You’re going to want to interview them, ask them questions, and more importantly, know what they charge.  If you can interview 3-5 people, this will be your best situation.  Remember, they want your business, and they will take the time out of their day to get you as a client.

Don’t be cheap

You may find that you like a lawyer, but he’s too expensive, so instead you go with the cheaper guy.  You have to remember that you can easily get what you pay for in life.  You’ll want to hire the guy that you feel will get the job done, even if it means paying a few more dollars.

Check with the BBB

Before you go out and hire that lawyer or service that seems like the best, you’ll want to check with the Better Business Bureau just to make sure they are legit.  If they have a poor grade rating, you may want to steer clear of them.  If they have a good rating, you may have found a good lawyer.

These are all great steps you can take when you’re looking for legal advice and ways to cut back on your debt.  Finding a lawyer will take time.  As long as you don’t go with the first guy you’re referred too, you should be fine.
