Some say that a recession is bad but others say we should all take advantage of it.  Why should we take advantage?  Well, while a lot of businesses are trying to stay afloat, they have no choice but to lower prices to compete with their competitor down the street.  What does this mean for you?  It means that you can find better deals and it may be time to buy something that you truly need but also keep in mind that you should always put debt first in front of entertainment.

Know what you need:  Before you go out and bargain hunt, know what you need.  Don’t purchase things that you don’t want because it’s going to collect dust in your closet.  This is the time to look for things that you can use like appliances, furniture and more.

Research online:  If you know what you’re going to get before you go shopping, go online to price comparison websites like PriceGrabber.com.  These sites will enable you to compare products from many different vendors.  A majority of the time, you won’t find a better deal anywhere else outside of the Internet but this isn’t always the case.

Hunt for coupons:  I don’t care what you’re buying, always look for a coupon!  Even if it sounds like it won’t have one, you’ll be surprised at what’s out there.  It’s also a good idea to find competitor ads and bring them in because some stores will beat them by 10% or more.

Bargain with them:  If you’re buying a bigger item such as a TV or Dishwasher, always try to get a better deal.  It’s never going to hurt to ask.  Tell them that you’re extremely interested and would only buy if they knock off 5-10%.  You’ll be amazed at how many times this works.  The worst thing they can say is no.

Even when there isn’t a recession, there are always deals to be found.  Use your head and do your homework when it comes to buying anything.  As long as you do your homework, you’ll find a great deal.
