The reason that you got into debt in the first place was the fact that you like to live beyond your means. Cutting Up Your Credit Cards

Instead of getting yourself deeper into the hole, you need to stop using debt. If you don’t have the cash to buy it immediately, don’t buy it until you have enough money. This means that you must cut up your credit cards and refrain from debt of all kinds while you pay off your current debts.

This concept, introduced by Dave Ramsey, is a very popular method that has proven effective with everyone using it.  The concept is extremely simple. You make minimum payments on all of your debts: credit cards, student loans, mortgages, etc. You make two lists of your debts. One lists your debts by interest rate and the other lists the debts by amount. You start by throwing every cent of extra money you have at the smallest debt you have. When you pay it off, you’ll feel the exhilaration of getting rid of the debt and be motivated to keep paying off the debts. Once you no longer have to pay that debt’s minimum payment, you add the former minimum payment to the highest interest debt every month. If you continue to do this, all of your debts will eventually get paid off.
