No matter where you live, you’re going to find that each area is going to be more than the next. We all know that New York City is expensive while Omaha, Nebraska is a lot more affordable. This is why that when you take a job offer, you have to factor in the cost of living as well because $50,000 can take you a lot further than New York City.
When it comes down to determining your cost of living, there are a few things that you can do to determine what you’re looking at when it comes to the area you’re living in or the area you’re looking to move to.
Look at all the expenses in the area
You may not notice it but there are so many things that you can but in a certain area and each state will vary greatly. From your education to clothing, these all will vary state to state.
When looking at your area, try factoring in the following costs in your state:
- Any Utilities such as gas, electric, water
- Cable TV/ Cable Internet / Phone Bill
- Higher education like college
- Taxes on property, income, etc.
- Food / Clothing / Appliances
- Food
- Health Costs
These all sound like simple items but they vary greatly from state to state. You’ll be amazed that one state is a lot higher than the next. Simple things like food and water may sound like they are going to be the same every where but even things like this can vary. A great place to find pricing on this is simply by going online and looking for quotes, etc.
Try an online cost of living calculator
The Internet is filled with great tools and one of them that I have used when I move was a cost of living calculator. With sites like BankRate.com, you can place your income into a search and it will come back to you with the differences in many categories such as rent, energy, pizza and so much more. It’s very complex and lays it out to you very nicely.
The formula is simple
Figuring out the cost of living where you’re living now isn’t hard at all. In fact, if you’re thinking about moving, compare the 2 prices and see the differences. This will give you a great idea on what places is the cheapest. You’ll find that some vary greatly while others are very similar.
When it comes down to determining the cost of living, all the right tools are at your fingertips. Call up utility companies for quotes, ask people who live there on message boards online. You should get a great idea on what you’re going to pay compared to where you live now.
