What debt collectors can't sayBeing in debt isn’t a fun thing.  From the stress to the debt collectors calling you, it really can seem like it’s never going to end.  If you’re one of the many today that are getting debt collector calls on a daily basis, did you know that they are restricted from doing certain things?  Well, it’s true and let’s take a look at what they can’t do.

Any type of harassment

If the collector ever harasses you and threats any type of violence or harm, this is strictly off limits and against the law.  Yes, many collectors out there will sometimes do anything to get a penny out of your pocket.  If they swear, annoy you or even threaten to do something bad, this all can be reported.

Giving you false information

If you find out the collector is acting as if they are someone else, this is forbidden.  Many collectors may falsely claim on who they are.  From falsely claiming that they are representatives for a company they belong to or give you false information that isn’t even true like the amount you owe on your bill.  This is all on grounds for disaster for that collection company and they should be reported immediately.

Things a collector may say that they shouldn’t would include:

  • You’ll be arrested for not paying your debt (this won’t happen).
  • They will take your belongings, seize your wages, etc. (this can happen by law but they can’t threaten it.)
  • They will take legal action and if you don’t cooperate, it’s illegal.

These are just a few statements you may hear that can’t be said.  Make sure you note these if you do hear a collector saying them.

Not engage in unfair practices

Some debt companies will go the distance when it comes to getting your money.  Some of these practices may include charging a fee, getting interest and any other fee on top of your debt.  They can’t deposit a post-dated check nor can they threaten you if you don’t pay.

There are some absolute scumbags when it comes to collecting debt.  Sure, you should pay off all of your debts but if you run into a company that just can’t abide by the rules, they should be reported immediately to the FTC.
