Collection agencies can get awfully annoying.  You get 10 phone calls a day, letters from them, as well as harassing people at your door.  It seems as if they never leave you alone!

Thankfully, there are things that you can do when you want to get rid of collection agencies as a whole.   Now, granted, they aren’t going to go away 100%, but you can limit your phone calls and more.

Listed below are a few tips and steps you can take to start the process right now:

#1 Know your laws: The United States has laws when it comes down to debt collection agencies.  You can view most of them here provided by the FTC.  If they are breaking any laws, be sure to contact the FTC, as well as let them know they are violating rules as well.  This will get them to shut up rather quickly.

Things such as harassment, threats of violence, profane language, and more are all against the law.

#2 Talk with them: Instead of ignoring the calls day after day, you can take steps to talk to them and believe it or not, most are willing to listen.  What you’re going to find that some are hard headed and want to threaten you, while others will work out a game plan with you.

#3 Write to them: If you don’t want them to call you, you will want to get it in writing.  When you write to them, be sure to state that you don’t want to be contacted via phone.  Send it via certified mail and the phone calls should be able to stop.

#4 Start paying: Yes, the collection calls are annoying, but they want their money.  I’m sure if you were in their shoes, you would want the money as well from the other person.  Again, it is very helpful to work out a payment plan.  As you pay the bill down or show that you’re paying, the calls are going to stop.

#5 Do your homework: When you’re contacted by these agencies, make sure to get everything in writing.  There are times where you may find that you won’t even owe the debt.  Know where the debt is from and what you have to do to get rid of it.  Some companies will settle for half the price.

The more you know about your debts, the better it’s going to be for you.  Again, as long as you know the laws and everything else, you should be able to have a rather smooth process with the collection agencies.
