Can a Bill Collector Call You at Work?
posted by FindSecuredCards.comYou’re at work, and the phone rings, and you find out it’s a bill collector asking where their payment is? Every day, this happens to countless individuals, and the question today is, “Can a bill collector call you at work?”
Bill collectors are able to call you at work, only if you don’t give them permission to. By law, if you tell the collector that you’re at work, and your employer forbids this kind of activity, they will have to stop by law. Federal law prohibits this, and the bill collectors know this.
So, what happens if they continue to call, even if you tell them that you want this to stop?
If the bill collectors continue to harass you, even if you tell them to stop, you’ll want to either contact your Attorney Generals office at NAAG.org, or you’ll want to contact the FTC. Each state has it’s own law, so make sure you check with your local state branch to see what the laws are, when it comes to bill collectors.
Even if you tell them to stop on the phone, make sure that you write them a certified letter as well. Make sure that you make a copy for yourself. The reason you’ll want to do this is because you’ll actually have some evidence, as compared to a phone call, where you won’t have any at all.
In the long term, calling at work can be done, only if you allow it to happen. Since 99% of the employers out there wouldn’t like it to happen on company time, it’s best that you follow some of the advice mentioned above.
