No matter where you live, you’re going to find that you’re always going to have to pay an electric bill.  The reason that I write these cost saving stories is solely based on the fact that when you’re in debt, you’re looking to save money in all corners.  Since our electric bills can be fairly high, I wanted to give you 8 steps that you can take to cut your bills by 20% today!

  • #1 Get a programmable thermostat: A thermostat like this is only going to cost you a few bucks, but it’s going to save you $100s over the next few years.  What you’re going to want to do is program it so that your heat / AC is down when you’re working and sleeping.
  • #2 Consider CFL: If you have an older based light bulb, you may want to consider investing into CFLs.  These bulbs not only take up less than 75% less energy, you’re going to help the environment, as well as your bill.
  • #3 Look into energy star: The next time you need to get a refrigerator, stove, or anything else, try and get yourself an energy start appliance.  These appliances can instantly cut 10% off your bill.
  • #4 Get a water heater jacket: Not too many people know about this one, but if you can get a water heater jacket, you’re going to trap the heat within the heater, not allowing it to escape.  They are fairly easy to install and can save you 25% alone!
  • #5 Watch the water flow: Watch your water flow, when you use it.  Try to get a lower powered shower head, as well as wash your dishes in a dishwasher, rather than in the sink.
  • #6 Seal your windows: If you’re not sure if your windows are sealed properly, get someone to come out and inspect them.  That cold air that may flow in can cause your heating bills to skyrocket.
  • #7 Block the sun: For those that are in hotter climates such as Arizona and Florida, you may want to consider getting tint for your windows to block the sun from baking your house.
  • #8 Just be smart: Turn off lights when you’re not using a room, turn off the TV, and more.  When something is eating up electricity, it’s just better to turn it off.  Trust me, this can all add up!

It’s not that hard to save on your electric bill.  If you have the money, you can always hire a HVAC to come out and inspect the house for you.  This can save you a good amount of money right there!
